Secret Bad Girl is a deeply healing memoir and trauma resolution guide for women who've suffered secret rapes or sexual abuse--and want both stories and instructions for being set free. Rachael Maddox bravely shares her own story of statutory rape and recovery, inviting readers into the possibility that their current sex issues, fears, stunted confidence or self-worth troubles, private addictions or private depressions, or impossible-seeming dreams, could in fact be resulting from unresolved sexual trauma. There's a myth that so many women bear the burden of in today's world. The myth is that we're bad for the violations that happen to us, as well as the mess of the aftermath of those abuses. Secret Bad Girl not only dispels this myth, but illuminates exactly how you can transcend it, embodying the aliveness, resilience and vitality available to you. Secret Bad Girl reads like works by Eve Ensler mixed with Peter Levine and a dash of Andrea Gibson. Stories. Science. Poetry. Most people never resolve their trauma because fear of entering into the territory of violation is so abrasive that they freeze. Rachael Maddox understands this fear and meets her readers in a place of compassion and grace, so that they can move into their long-awaited healing.

I stumbled across this book after watching a webinar about the publisher. Part of me wanted to not like this book because I was suspicious that this publisher wasn't just overselling what they offer to authors .I gotta say though, it is an excellent book.

It's the title that captured my attention because my secret is that I have often felt like a bad person. I'm pretty sure no one would think of me as a bad person and I have no proof I'm a bad person, but the feeling has been there nonetheless. And yes, like most people, I've worked on it, it's improved but it can still rear its ugly head. I'm also a coach -- and recently realized my passion is to coach women with trauma. So it was as if the stars aligned.

This was a very well written, well-organized book. It also felt as if all of the content was valuable -- no word went wasted. I felt that I could relate to some of her stories -- and sadly, I believe that so many of us women go through sexual trauma. But I also felt as if I could apply the same symptoms of sexual trauma to all trauma I've personally experienced, specifically tied to family. This book also turned me onto Somatic Experiencing Therapy which I am now exploring not only for myself but as a certification to hone my own healing skills (because let me tell you, therapy just hasn't done the job of healing me fully and general coaching is awesome and powerful -- more so than therapy for me -- but it doesn't fully heal either in my experience).

I will come back here to update after I've spent some time receiving SE Therapy and potentially becoming certified. I hope this was helpful.

Secret Bad Girl A Sexual Trauma Memoir and Resolution Guide Rachael Maddox 9781683090441 Books Reviews

So many women have been waiting for this book, Secret Bad Girl, whether they realized it or not. This courageously raw and personal experiential text, brings new levels of understanding to those who have been sexually traumatized. Rachael is so open that she is instantly a long sought for companion on the lonely path of the 'trauma spell'. This book is a must read for anyone and everyone who has experienced sexual trauma, or knows someone who has... which sadly, statistically is all of us.
Powerful and brave, this is the book that I wish that I had during so many moments of secrecy and trauma over the course of my adolescence. What Rachael Maddox has done with this book is crack open the conversation that we aren't having - the one with ourselves about what it means to take responsibility for our bodies, to become whole again, and to reclaim our lives (and sexual selves) by rebuilding it from the inside out. The best piece? The writing is infectious. Her charismatic approach to a difficult topic helps the words seep around the edges, so that you can truly access. I couldn't recommend this book more highly.
This is a well-written book about a very difficult subject, yet one that needs to be written about and read. Kudos to Rachael for her courage in being able to share her journey from experiencing trauma via rape through all the steps of her healing process. While not a victim of sexual trauma, I have experienced physiological trauma, so appreciated her insights on how our body and mind store and suppress it. Most importantly, trauma sufferers become aware that healing is possible, and Rachael outlines clear steps toward achieving that end.
Rachael delivers a beautiful treatise on the epidemic of sexual trauma AND how to resolve its lingering effects in the body... It is my wish that anyone who has experienced trauma of any kind get this book into their hands, onto their phone, kindle, etc. Let the secrets out and let the healing begin. Plus, I think you'll enjoy her mad poetry skills and imagery that clearly paints a picture of her devotion to this cause.
I am not sure how I even stumbled across Rachael Maddox's work but somehow I found her book and am grateful to the Universe that I did. When I began reading Secret Bad Girl I found myself unable to put it down as I found myself in her story and knew to the core of who I was that her healing journey was inspiration for my own. I appreciate Rachael's authenticity and candidness as well as her knowledge and compassion for others. I searched her name in Apple Podcasts and downloaded every podcast she was a guest on (and listen to them on repeat) as her wealth of information was a salve I needed to be able to begin healing some of my own sexual trauma.

As a psychotherapist and someone who regularly works with traumatized individuals, this book is an excellent resource for practitioners who are interested in helping their clients process through trauma in a lasting way. I appreciate Rachael's use of Somatic Experiencing (Peter Levine) in her own journey and the book as she demystifies the healing process and allows the wounded spaces to take small steps towards recovery. I have told many of my clients and supervisees about this book and have it listed as a resource on my website. Excited to continue to learn from Rachael!
I thought I had posted my review of this book when it came out. I guess timing is everything. Maybe I was supposed to think of this book today. Maybe there's a message for me in it that I hadn't received until now.

I didn't think I was a "secret bad girl." In fact, if anything, I was the complete opposite. Frozen inside. Rachael's words and message are warm and loving enough to thaw ice around the most frozen of hearts. Not only does she tell her own story, she explains the effects of trauma as completely as any college textbook.

I loved this book. I think you will too.
I sat down with this intending to read a chapter and write a quick thumbs up. I never set it down.
New Years Eve I met the brilliant light that is Rachael Maddox. In the short period of time we spent together, we laughed, cried, sang, danced... and Rachael spoke for me... a resounding NO that I was only able to utter politely, quietly... meekly. I am still finding my voice... and after reading this book I have a better understanding of why.
I write this with tears still flowing. Rachael you have given me something I haven't been able to give myself. I have hope. A tiny little glimmer that is peaking through and challenging the lifelong belief that I am broken. ...maybe, just maybe, I am not.
